🌍 Insights From COP29

The COP29 summit brought parties together to accelerate action toward the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. Current UCSD GPS students will discuss their first-hand experiences as participants in this high-level, multinational event: what worked, what didn’t and what will be needed as governments grapple with the need for cooperation to slow global warming?

Attendees will leave with a new appreciation for the everyday stuff they throw away (add to the landfill.)
🌲 Global Oak Conservation in Southern California & Northern Baja
When: Tuesday, December 17, from 06:00 PM to 9:00 PM
Where: Casa del Prado Rm 101, Balboa Park, 1650 El PradoSan Diego, CA 92101
The oak conservation program at SDZWA is focused on six species of conservation concern that are found in San Diego and in the broader region of Southern California and Baja California (Mexico). These efforts are close collaborations with multiple partners, including the Global Conservation Consortium for Oak, The Nature Conservancy, and the San Diego Botanic Garden.
🚗 EV Charging Station Utilization Reporting Regulations
When: Wednesday, December 18, from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

The California Energy Commission (CEC) will host a workshop to discuss a revised staff proposal for new regulations that will require select electric vehicle (EV) charging station operators to report the utilization session data of charging stations. This workshop will focus exclusively on a revised staff proposal for utilization and session data reporting of charging stations and will solicit public feedback.

Come out for an informal meet and greet / networking event to celebrate the an outdoor holiday event to get together one last time in 2024. AEE San Diego will reserve the space and arrange for snacks/appetizers. Feel free to bring your friends, spouses, partners, kids, pets, etc. as we want to make the event easy for everyone to attend.

🦢 Volunteer work party to help the wetlands in Mission Bay
When: Thursday, December 19, from 09:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Nature lovers, bird enthusiasts, and everyone interested in learning more about the habitat existing in the heart of our city are welcome! Learn about the Ridgway's Rails at Kendall-Frost Marsh. Take in the extraordinary sights found only in protected habitats like this one. Activities vary for each event and include trash pick up, invasive plant removal, and more.
💧 River Center Care Team
When: Thursday, December 19, from 8:00 AM - 10:00 AM
Where: 2450 Camino Del Rio North, San Diego, CA 92108
Join in helping to "beautify" our new River Center at Grant Park! You can help take care of this exiting new nature education center and eco-park by joining the community in vegetation removal and weeding, trash pick-up, graffiti removal, and occasional planting. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals with a flexible schedule to contribute 2 hours of service.

🦅 Birding Outing: Famosa Slough
When: Saturday, December 21, from 09:00 AM - 11:00 AM
Where: At the sign on Famosa Blvd. north of the Rialto St.
Join SDBA at Famosa Slough, one of San Diego’s most popular hotspots for birding! All levels of experiences are welcome. We go at a casual/slow pace and the walk usually lasts about 2 hours, but you can leave early if you'd like. This walk will be on a dirt path where there are a few benches for resting, but the walk is incompatible for a wheelchair and there are no restrooms available.
🌄 Winter Solstice Sunset Hike at Lillian Hill
When: Saturday, December 21, from 3:30 PM - 6:00 PM
Where: Lillian Hill, Descanso, CA 91916
Join the San Diego River Park Foundation for a special Winter Solstice sunset hike to the top of one of our newly acquired open space properties, Lillian Hill Preserve. A top Lillian Hill, you'll enjoy breathtaking views of Three Sisters Waterfall and the expansive San Diego River Gorge, including Eagle Peak, El Capitan Mountain, and other mountain tops in San Diego! Please bring a headlamp or flashlight and plenty of drinking water for the hike.
👩🌾 Point Loma Native Plant Garden Club

Join the San Diego River Park Foundation's Garden Club twice a month to bring community members together to learn about native plants, gardening, and taking care of a native plant landscape. The Point Loma Native Plant Garden is a hidden gem that features many rare and endangered native plant species that are found along the San Diego River. Some of the plants in the collection are not found naturally anywhere else in the world but in our region.
